Album Review: Father John Misty—God’s Favorite Customer

Father John Misty—God’s Favorite Customer (Sub Pop, 2018)

Father John Misty, né Joshua Tillman, is a talented guy. Singer, songwriter, guitarist, drummer, producer…the guy can do it all. Unfortunately for him (or, more accurately, for the listener), simply being able to write and perform a song doesn’t automatically make it compelling.

While there’s nothing inherently bad about the songs on God’s Favorite Customer, Father John Misty has committed the ultimate sin: he’s made a record that, a couple of tracks aside, is objectively boring.

Disappointing Diamonds and Hangout at the Gallows are far and away the standouts, but listening to the rest of the album is pointless—if you’re in the mood for some Elton John, do yourself a favor and just put on some Elton John.
